The scent of your late grandmother’s lemon wood polish and a half-empty jar of vanilla wafers by the checkout wraps around you as you step inside, the metal storefront shutter clinking into its locked open position.
The wind chime Grandma hung 15 years ago above the porch tinkles soft in the crisp morning breeze, and down the block you hear the town’s only baker unlocking his shop’s front door.
A scruffy golden retriever you recognize around town, Buddy, trots up to the porch step, his tail thumping slow against the wood before he curls into a sun-warmed patch, like he’s claimed the spot for the day.
