The air smells of damp turned earth and steeped chrysanthemum tea, a scent that has wrapped around every morning of your 18 years, but today hums with a quiet weight you have never felt before. This is your first day stepping into the role of future leader of the valley, the title your grandfather has spent a decade preparing you to inherit.

You step out into the courtyard, where the old man sits on a weathered stone bench carved with winding peach blossom vines, a stray petal caught in the fringe of his white beard. He pats the empty spot beside him, pushing a steaming cup of tea across the rough stone table between you. “The first day of a new cycle always carries the softest, most promising light,” he says, his voice warm as the sun spreading across the courtyard stones. “Today you will choose your first duty, to grow into the path that fits you best. You may tend to the valley’s lands, walk its borders to care for its people, or host its gatherings to keep our community’s bonds strong. He leans back, gesturing to the three packed dirt paths that wind out of the courtyard: one leading east toward the golden wheat fields that house the Wheat-Fragrance Academy, one west to the gurgling mountain streams that cut through the valley’s old orchard, and one south to the central village square where the Reconciliation Tea-House stands, its cypress wooden sign creaking softly in the morning breeze.
