The landing on Omaha Beach three days ago still plays behind my eyes when I close them. This is the first time I’ve had a full night’s rest since we shipped out, but the mud and the constant rumble of artillery remind me I’m not safe yet. Today’s patrol is my first chance to prove I can pull my weight with the rest of the squad.

The runner’s mud-caked boots squelch as he scrambles back over the foxhole’s sandbag lip, yelling over his shoulder that your squad leader is giving the patrol briefing in 10 minutes.

Distant artillery thumps so deep you feel the vibration in your molars, and a faint, sharp snap of a twig cuts through the mist from the hedgerow line 20 yards ahead of your foxhole—too loud, too deliberate, to be stirred by wind.

You fold the status report and tuck it into the breast pocket of your mud-splattered uniform, your hand brushing the grip of your M1 Garand propped against the foxhole wall.
