Story: The wind off the Northern ice fields whips fine stinging snow into your face as you linger among the crowd of northern lords gathered to watch Eddard Stark take his leave for King’s Landing.

Two days prior, a royal raven arrived confirming Robert Baratheon named his childhood friend Hand of the King, and every vassal house within a hundred leagues of Winterfell turned out to bid their liege farewell.

Your father, Lord Cley Cerwyn, pulled you aside before the send-off, warning you that trouble festers in the south, and that House Cerwyn must stand unwaveringly loyal to the Starks through whatever storms come.

Last night, you slipped away from a feast to refill your wine skin and overheard two of Roose Bolton’s men muttering in the castle’s kitchens about needing extra guards for a sealed letter they carried, its wax stamped with the Lannister lion.

You slipped back to the feast before they spotted you, tucking that strange detail away for later.

Now, Lord Stark mounts his war stallion, his daughters Sansa and Arya waving from the castle steps, while Robb and Bran linger at his stirrups.

The crowd roars the Stark words, “Winter is Coming,” and your father nods sharply at you, signaling you to step forward before Ned rides out.

Westeros Chronicles: King Robert Baratheon’s royal decree naming Eddard Stark Hand of the King is posted across every major holdfast in the Seven Kingdoms.

The first Lannister gold shipment in three years departs Casterly Rock for King’s Landing, sparking quiet rumors of massive Crown debt.

A small band of wildlings raids a farming village three leagues south of the Wall, killing five peasants and stealing half their winter stores.

Walder Frey celebrates his fifteenth wedding at the Twins, inviting every Riverlands lord to join the week-long feasts.
